The true warrior that he is, Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida is ready and willing to take on any opponent in ONE Championship.
In an interview with SCMP MMA, the BJJ great likened himself to a soldier who will immediately buckle down to work and get whatever mission he’s assigned done:
“To be honest, I see myself as a soldier. They give me the mission and I just go. So I’m not thinking of [anyone] specific.”
Watch the interview below:
‘Buchecha’ was last in action in August last year, beating Belarusian Kirill Grishenko at ONE on Prime Video 1 by way of first-round submission due to a heel hook. It was his fourth straight victory in ONE Championship’s heavyweight MMA division.
The 17-time BJJ world champion made his promotional debut in September 2021 at ONE: Revolution, defeating fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva in the first round by submission.
There is no word yet on when he will fight next in the stacked heavyweight division, which gives him potential bouts against the likes of reigning world champion Arjan Bhullar and interim world titleholder Anatoly Malykhin, who are penciled for a unification bout later this year.
Multi-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida has been on an impressive roll in ONE Championship. With that, he sees himself competing for the world title in the very near future.
In four fights to date in the promotion, the legendary fighter has remained unblemished, winning all of them by stoppage in the first round. ‘Buchecha’ has made it known that foremost in his sights is the heavyweight world championship.
The BJJ legend told ONE Championship in an interview:
“I’m sure I’m getting closer to my goal, which is to fight for the title and win the belt. I have four fights and four wins.”
He added:
“Among the heavyweights, I’m the guy who’s been fighting the most, so I’m on the right track. I’m sure I’ll get this chance to fight for the belt soon.”
‘Buchecha’ is all the more interested in vying for the belt as ONE is determined to showcase its fights in Brazil regularly through a broadcast agreement with Globo’s Combate, the leading provider of premium combat sports content and pay-per-views in the country.
