The New England Patriots dominated the league for two decades. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and former star QB Tom Brady are considered the reason behind their success.
Bill Belichick became the Patriots’ head coach in 2000 and Tom Brady played his rookie season with the team the same year. Thus began the franchise’s journey of winning six Super Bowls.
The Patriots have made 11 Super Bowl appearances since 1986 and the last nine of those were played between 2002 and 2019.
They share the title of most Super Bowl wins with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have also won it six times.
New England won their first Lombardi Trophy in 2002 when they played against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 36. The Patriots defeated the Rams 20-17. Their second win came a season later in 2004, where they won 32-29 against the Carolina Panthers. Kicker Adam Vinatieri scored the game-winning field goals in both games, and the Patriots won by three points in the last minute.
The following season, the New England Patriots made their fifth Super Bowl appearance against the Philadelphia Eagles. MVP Deion Branch was the star player of the game with 11 receptions and helped his team win their third Super Bowl title.
Their next Super Bowl win came after almost a decade in 2015 when they defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. In 2017, they won number five after finishing 34-28 against the Falcons, who were 25 points ahead of them the first half.
The Patriots’ most recent title came in 2019, where they faced the Los Angeles Rams for the second time. New England won the game 13-3, and it also became the lowest scoring championship game in the history of the NFL.
