Mat Ishbia’s Michigan State tenure did not go as some may have thought. Despite recently starting the purchase of the Phoenix Suns, he was far from a star on the hardwood.

In three seasons, Mat Ishbia’s Michigan State stats are almost non-existent. He played in a total of 48 games and averaged less than one point per game. Ishbia’s best year was during his junior campaign, where he averaged 1.1 points and 0.7 assists across 13 games.

Despite not being much of an impact player, Ishbia did see some success during his time with the Spartans. As a freshman, he was part of the Michigan State squad that went on to win the national championship in 2000.

Sources: Billionaire Mat Ishbia is purchasing the Phoenix Suns and Mercury for $4 billion. Robert Sarver has agreed in principle to sell. Ishbia was a national champion on Michigan State‘s basketball team in 2000.

Overall, he played just 2.4 minutes per game in his three seasons at Michigan State. Over those seasons, he averaged just 0.6 points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Now a billionaire, Phoenix Suns fans will hope his tenure as owner goes better than his tenure as a college basketball player at Michigan State.

Matt Ishbia can turn new leaf in basketball journey

While things might not have worked out for Mat Ishbia at Michigan State, he has a chance to turn things around in the NBA. The Phoenix Suns are not far removed from being in the NBA Finals, and still have a strong core.

Despite their recent skid (4-6 in their last ten games), the Suns still find themselves near the top of the Western Conference standings. Their record of 19-12 is good for third place. The Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies are the only teams currently ahead of them.

As far as current teams go, Mat Ishbia is making a good investment with the Phoenix Suns. They have a cast of players that can compete now and for the foreseeable future.

Led by Devin Booker, the Suns will be looking to get back to the top of the Western Conference as the season rages on. Given that Mat Ishbia’s Michigan State team won a national title, he will have some high expectations. Hopefully for him, that same success can transfer over to the NBA world.
