In a clash of new captains, Shubman Gill led Gujarat Titans to victory while Mumbai Indians faced their 12th consecutive opening match loss in IPL 2024.
Mumbai Indians, under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, endured a six-run defeat in their first game of the season amidst constant booing from the Ahmedabad crowd. Chasing a target of 169, MI needed 19 runs off the final over. However, tight bowling from Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma restricted them. Despite Pandya’s efforts with a six and a four, Umesh Yadav’s crucial wickets turned the tide. Earlier, Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis provided a strong start, but GT’s bowlers, led by Rashid and Mohit, tightened the screws, resulting in a 46-run knock from Brevis being in vain.
Winning the toss, MI opted to bowl first. Although GT seemed poised for a score near 200, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance limited them to 168/6. Pandya’s first over conceded 11 runs, and despite his return in the third over, it was Bumrah who made the initial breakthrough with a trademark yorker. Spinners Piyush Chawla and Shams Mulani further dented GT’s progress, dismissing Gill on 31 off 22. However, strong performances from Sai Sudharsan, Azmatullah Omarzai, and David Miller pushed GT’s total. Bumrah’s return in the 17th over saw the dismissals of Miller and Sudharsan, but GT had already set a competitive target.
