In a thrilling opening clash of IPL 2024, newly appointed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad led the Chennai Super Kings to a triumphant start as they secured a commanding victory against Faf du Plessis’ Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
Mustafizur Rahman of CSK was crowned the ‘Player of the Match’ for his exceptional four-wicket haul against RCB in the inaugural match of TATA IPL 2024.
Facing a target of 174 runs set by RCB, CSK’s Gaikwad (15) and Rachin Ravindra (37) provided a solid foundation. Following their dismissals, Ajinkya Rahane (27) and Daryl Mitchell (22) furthered the momentum. However, it was the pivotal contributions of Shivam Dube (34) and Ravindra Jadeja (25) that sealed the victory for the defending champions.
For RCB, Cameron Green claimed two wickets, while Yash Dayal and Karn Sharma chipped in with one each.
Earlier in the day, RCB won the toss and opted to bat first. However, they faced an early setback, losing five wickets quickly, courtesy of Mustafizur Rahman’s impressive spell. Despite this, RCB managed to post a total of 173/6 in their allotted 20 overs, with Anuj Rawat (48) and Dinesh Kartik (38*) leading the recovery.
Virat Kohli achieved a significant milestone during the match, surpassing 12,000 T20 runs, while Mustafizur Rahman claimed his 50th wicket in IPL.
CSK and RCB have now clashed 31 times, with CSK emerging victorious in 20 encounters, RCB in 10, and one match concluding without a result. Additionally, CSK boasts a commendable record at MA Chidambaram Stadium, having won 46 IPL matches and lost 18.
Thursday saw Ruturaj Gaikwad appointed as the new CSK skipper, succeeding the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who stepped down from the position. Under Gaikwad’s leadership, CSK has clinched the IPL trophy on five occasions – in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.
